Halal Food in Ueno, Okachimachi and Akihabara (2026): Five Certified Restaurants on One Corridor

The stretch from Kanda through Akihabara and Okachimachi up to Ueno holds eighteen halal venues in our data and five with a named certifier, which is more certified halal food than any single Tokyo district we cover. Two are open until 5am.

TL;DR: The corridor from Kanda through Akihabara and Okachimachi up to Ueno holds eighteen halal venues in our data, and five of them name a certifying body. That is more certified halal food than any single district we cover, including Ginza. Two venues here serve until 5am, which makes this the best late-night halal area in Tokyo. Three entries are halal-options venues rather than halal kitchens, and we say which. One restaurant still named by search results for this area has been closed since 2020.

This is the halal corridor most travel guides describe as two separate places. Akihabara is the electronics and anime district, Ueno is the museums and the park, and Okachimachi is the station between them that nobody plans a day around. In halal terms they are one continuous strip, walkable end to end, with As-Salaam Masjid at Okachimachi roughly in the middle.

The pages ranking for this query have noticed the density. Halal Food Maps runs a full Akihabara and Okachimachi guide, Halal Navi publishes a 2026 Asakusa and Ueno area guide, Halal Food in Japan has a Ueno, Asakusa and Nippori directory, and Halal Ramen Japan lists five ramen shops around As-Salaam Masjid. What none of them does is separate the certified kitchens from the halal-options izakayas, and that separation is the whole point of the page.

The five certified restaurants#

| Restaurant | What it serves | Certifier | Price | Prayer room | |---|---|---|---|---| | Ayam-Ya (Shin-Okachimachi) | 100% halal chicken ramen | Japan Halal Foundation | Β₯1,000–1,500 | Yes | | Wagyu Yakiniku Panga | A5 wagyu yakiniku | Japan Halal Foundation (2-star) | Β₯5,000–9,000 | Not listed | | Shinjuku-tei Ueno Park | A5 wagyu ramen | Japan Muslim Access (NAHA) | Β₯1,500–4,000 | Yes | | NikoNiko Halal Mazemen & Curry | Sri Lankan curry, mazemen | Japan Muslim Association | Β₯1,000–2,000 | Not listed | | SHOUTAIAN Kanda | A5 wagyu yakiniku | NPO Japan Asia Halal Association | Β₯5,000–15,000 | Not listed |

Ayam-Ya has been doing 100% halal chicken-based ramen since 2016, three minutes from Shin-Okachimachi, with a prayer room and wudu facilities on site. At Β₯1,000 to Β₯1,500 it is the cheapest certified meal on this page and, for most visitors, the single most useful address on it. Lunch runs to 15:00 with last orders at 14:30, and dinner from 17:00 with last orders at 21:30, so the gap in the middle of the afternoon is real.

Wagyu Yakiniku Panga is one minute from Okachimachi, beside Ameyoko Market, serving top-four-percent A5 wagyu with full halal traceability under a two-star Japan Halal Foundation certification, in a room of roughly fifteen seats. The whole building is pork-free and alcohol-free. Reserve. Fifteen seats in a district this busy is not a walk-in proposition, and the comparison with Tokyo's other certified yakiniku houses is in best halal wagyu and yakiniku in Tokyo.

NikoNiko is the unusual one. A Sri Lankan Muslim owner serving home-style curries alongside Japanese mazemen, certified by the Japan Muslim Association, no alcohol, ten seats at a counter, two minutes from Iwamotocho and about seven from Akihabara. It is one of very few Sri Lankan halal kitchens in Tokyo and the only South Asian venue in our entire directory with a named certifier, a point we made at length in halal Indian and Pakistani restaurants in Tokyo.

SHOUTAIAN Kanda is the high end: certified A5 wagyu yakiniku in the GEMS Shin-Nihonbashi tower with private rooms, certified by the NPO Japan Asia Halal Association in February 2025, four minutes from Kanda's south exit.

Verified kitchens, including the late-night ones#

| Venue | Cuisine | Nearest station | Price | Hours worth knowing | |---|---|---|---|---| | Halal Ramen Toribushi | Chicken paitan ramen | Okachimachi, 2 min | Β₯900–1,500 | 11:00–24:00, no regular closing day | | Ueno Halal Wagyu Ramen Ninja | Wagyu ramen | Okachimachi, 3 min | Β₯1,000–3,000 | 10:00–05:00, food to 04:00 | | Yakiniku Iwasaki | Kuroge wagyu yakiniku | Ueno-Okachimachi, 2 min | Β₯3,000–8,000 | Until 05:00 daily | | Hangry Joe's Tokyo | Nashville hot chicken | Akihabara, 4 min | Β₯1,000–4,000 | To 23:00, Sundays to 21:00 | | Sultan | Pakistani, Indian | Suehirocho, 2 min | Β₯1,000–2,000 | 11:00–20:00 daily | | Star Kebab | Turkish kebab | Suehirocho, 2 min | Under Β₯1,000 | 11:00–21:00 daily | | Kaenzan Xinjiang Ajido | Uyghur, Chinese Muslim | Keisei Ueno, 2 min | Β₯1,500–4,000 | 11:00–23:00 daily | | Al Mina | Palestinian, Arab | Kanda, 3–4 min | Β₯2,000–5,000 | Dinner only, closed Sundays | | Cinta Jawa Cafe | Indonesian | Akihabara, 3 min | Β₯800–1,500 | 11:00–22:00 daily | | Restaurant Zakuro | Persian, Uzbek, Turkish | Nippori, 5 min | Β₯500–1,500 | Closed Mondays |

Two of these are the reason to bookmark this page. Ueno Halal Wagyu Ramen Ninja serves until 05:00 with food orders to 04:00, and Yakiniku Iwasaki, a halal-certified Kuroge wagyu yakiniku that opened in 2025, also runs to 05:00. Tokyo has very little halal food after midnight, and two of the exceptions are within a few minutes of each other here. Neither names a certifying body in a source we can check, so both sit at the verified tier despite Iwasaki being described as halal-certified, and if you are strict, ask at the counter.

Al Mina is worth a separate mention. Fine-dining Palestinian and Arabian food, fully alcohol-free, 100% halal meat, listed on Halal Gourmet Japan since 2010, with a private room for parties of twenty to fifty. It is dinner-only from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, and lunch happens only by group reservation. It belongs to the category we covered in halal Turkish and Middle Eastern food in Tokyo, where none of the twenty-one venues names a commercial certifier.

Restaurant Zakuro near Nippori does an all-you-can-eat lunch from Β₯500, which is the cheapest entry in our entire directory, in a floor-seating room of Moroccan lamps, Muslim-owned, halal meat only.

Three venues that are not halal kitchens#

This is where most area guides blur the line, so we will not.

  • Khana Khaja, one minute from Naka-Okachimachi, has halal meats in its tandoori, kabab and curry dishes, and it also serves alcohol. Halal items, shared kitchen. Cheap lunch sets, honest tier: options.
  • Issho Tokyo Ueno does halal Kobe-beef courses and halal motsunabe, but they must be requested in advance, and the izakaya serves alcohol and non-halal dishes to other guests. Tier: options.
  • Grand Samarkand at Nezu is a pork-free Uzbek menu where alcohol is available. Tier: pork-free, which is the lowest rung we publish.

None of those three is a bad restaurant. They are simply not the same proposition as Ayam-Ya, and a page that lists all six under one heading has told you nothing. The tier definitions are in halal-certified vs Muslim-friendly.

The restaurant that closed in 2020 and still ranks#

Search for halal food in Akihabara and you will still be told about the halal CoCo Ichibanya branch. It closed around 2020. Both Tabelog and Google Maps carry the permanent-closure flag, and it is one of the entries in our delisting changelog precisely because we dropped it rather than letting it sit in the directory.

That is the practical case for liveness checking. A halal guide that never re-checks its own list degrades quietly, and the traveller who discovers it is standing outside a shuttered shop at 20:00 in a city where the next certified option may be a train ride away.

Praying between meals#

As-Salaam Masjid at Okachimachi sits between Ueno and Akihabara and holds Friday prayer, which makes this corridor unusually easy to plan around a Friday lunch: pray at Okachimachi, then eat at Ayam-Ya, Panga or Toribushi, all within a few minutes. Masjid Nusantara is roughly two minutes from Hangry Joe's in the Akihabara direction. On-site prayer rooms in the venues themselves are at Ayam-Ya, Shinjuku-tei Ueno Park and Cinta Jawa Cafe. The city-wide map is in prayer rooms and mosques in Tokyo.

A day on the corridor#

  1. Morning in Ueno Park and the museums, with Shinjuku-tei Ueno Park three minutes from Yushima for a certified lunch when you come out.
  2. Afternoon down Ameyoko to Okachimachi. If you want Panga for dinner, book it now rather than walking in.
  3. Friday prayer at As-Salaam Masjid if the day is Friday, then Ayam-Ya at Β₯1,000 to Β₯1,500.
  4. Evening in Akihabara, with Star Kebab under Β₯1,000 or Hangry Joe's if the group wants something loud.
  5. After midnight, Ninja or Iwasaki, because almost nothing else in Tokyo is open and halal at that hour.

How we checked this#

Every venue here is a listing in our directory with a last-verified date, an evidence link and a stated verification method. A certifier is named only where a certifying body appears in the evidence, never inferred from a badge or a roundup, and venues serving alcohol are capped into a lower tier no matter what the kitchen does. Closed venues are removed and recorded rather than left to rot on the page. The method is on how we verify. Next door, see halal food in Asakusa and halal food near Tokyo Station.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the halal food in Ueno?
Ueno and Okachimachi sit next to each other and share a cluster. Ayam-Ya near Shin-Okachimachi does certified halal chicken ramen with a prayer room, Wagyu Yakiniku Panga beside Ameyoko Market is certified A5 wagyu, and Shinjuku-tei Ueno Park does certified wagyu ramen three minutes from Yushima. Two late-night options, Ueno Halal Wagyu Ramen Ninja and Yakiniku Iwasaki, run until 5am.
Is there halal food in Akihabara?
Yes, and the nearest certified kitchens are a few minutes away in Kanda rather than in Akihabara itself. In Akihabara proper we list Hangry Joe's for Nashville hot chicken, Sultan for Pakistani, Star Kebab for Turkish and Cinta Jawa Cafe for Indonesian. NikoNiko in Kanda, certified by the Japan Muslim Association, is a seven-minute walk from Akihabara Station.
Is there a mosque near Ueno or Akihabara?
As-Salaam Masjid at Okachimachi sits between Ueno and Akihabara and holds Friday prayer, and Masjid Nusantara is about two minutes from Hangry Joe's. On-site prayer space in the restaurants themselves is rarer: Ayam-Ya, Shinjuku-tei Ueno Park and Cinta Jawa Cafe have it. The full map is in our prayer rooms guide.
Is the halal CoCo Ichibanya in Akihabara still open?
No. It closed around 2020, and both Tabelog and Google Maps carry the permanent-closure flag. It is in our delisting changelog for that reason, yet it still turns up in search results for halal food in Akihabara. If a guide sends you there, the guide has not checked.
