Halal Food in Shibuya and Harajuku (2026): Three Certified, and What Is Worth Two Stops Further Out

Every halal venue in our Shibuya and Harajuku data, with the certifier named, plus the ones a few minutes down the line in Ebisu, Yoyogi-Uehara, Nakameguro and Shimokitazawa that most Shibuya guides leave out.

TL;DR: Ten halal venues in Shibuya and Harajuku proper, three of them with a named certifier, plus six more within a few minutes on the same lines that Shibuya guides routinely omit: the mosque market and patisserie at Tokyo Camii in Yoyogi-Uehara, Honolu in Ebisu, Sri Balaji in Nakameguro, a Moroccan kitchen in Shimokitazawa and a halal donut shop in Sangenjaya. One famous Shibuya name serves halal wagyu and alcohol at the same time, and we say which.

Shibuya is where most first trips to Tokyo actually start, and it is badly served by halal guides. The most-linked Shibuya list we could find, Halal Navi's ten halal foods, still carries a 2020 update stamp. MATCHA has a newer guide, Tripadvisor ranks by review count, and Tablecheck runs a Harajuku landing page. None of them names the certifying body, and all of them stop at the ward boundary.

The ward boundary is the wrong line. From Shibuya Station, Tokyo Camii is three stops on the Chiyoda line, Ebisu is one stop on the Yamanote, Nakameguro and Shimokitazawa are both under ten minutes. Those journeys are shorter than crossing Shinjuku on foot.

The three with a named certifier#

| Restaurant | Area | Certifier | Price | Prayer room | Closed | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Halal Wagyu Yakiniku Gyumon | Shibuya, 5 min | Malaysia Halal Corporation | ¥5,000–8,000 | Not listed | Open daily | | Gyumon Hanare | Shibuya, 8 min | Malaysia Halal Corporation | ¥5,000–6,000 | Not listed | Open daily | | Shinjuku-tei Shibuya | Shibuya, 5 min | Japan Muslim Access (NAHA) | ¥4,000–6,000 | Yes | Mondays |

Gyumon is charcoal-grilled A5 wagyu in a retro izakaya room, certified by the Malaysia Halal Corporation, and the second branch, Hanare, is the family-friendly one with an English menu. Evening reservations are worth making. If wagyu is the reason for the trip, the city-wide picture is in best halal wagyu and yakiniku in Tokyo.

Shinjuku-tei Shibuya is the same certified wagyu ramen concept as the chain's flagship, with a prayer room, and it is the most expensive branch in the group. The Asakusa, Ginza, Ikebukuro and Ueno branches serve a very similar bowl for considerably less, which is laid out in halal ramen in Tokyo. Note the Monday closure.

Verified halal in Shibuya and Harajuku#

| Venue | Area | What it is | Price | Note | |---|---|---|---|---| | Naruto | Shibuya, 3 min | Halal wagyu yakiniku and ramen | ¥3,000–6,000 | Prayer room, Muslim staff, non-alcoholic beer, open to 01:30. Closed Wednesdays | | Cinta Jawa Cafe | Shibuya, 3 min | Indonesian | ¥800–1,500 | All-halal menu, open to 23:00. Beer is on the menu | | Malay Asian Cuisine | Shibuya, 7–10 min | Malaysian | ¥1,000–2,000 | Around fifty dishes: nasi lemak, laksa, roti canai, satay | | Kuta Bali Cafe | Harajuku, 1 min | Indonesian | ¥1,000–3,000 | Muslim-owned, prayer room (mushola) | | Mr. HALAL | Harajuku, 2 min | New York chicken over rice | ¥880–1,280 | Behind Tokyu Plaza. Irregular hours — check before going | | Kebab Box J | Harajuku, 2 min | Turkish doner | Under ¥1,000 | Meiji-dori near Laforet, 10:00–23:00 daily |

The Indonesian pair is worth calling out. Kuta Bali in Harajuku and Cinta Jawa in Shibuya are two of the more reliable options in this part of the city for travellers from Southeast Asia, and Kuta Bali's prayer room makes it the better base of the two for a long Harajuku afternoon.

The halal-options entry, and why it is separate#

Sushi Gonpachi Shibuya serves halal Ozaki-wagyu and halal sushi courses, takes reservations about three days ahead, and stays open until 03:30. It also serves alcohol. Our tiers cap any venue that serves alcohol on the premises below the alcohol-free group, regardless of what the kitchen does, so Gonpachi is listed as halal options rather than as a halal restaurant. Whether that distinction changes your decision is yours to make, and the reasoning is in halal-certified vs Muslim-friendly.

The same logic applies to Enrique Marruecos in Shimokitazawa, a Moroccan kitchen with a prayer room, halal meat, tagine and couscous, listed in the same tier. It is closed Mondays and opens only in the evening.

Worth two stops further out#

| Venue | Where | Why go | |---|---|---| | Tokyo Camii Halal Market and Café | Yoyogi-Uehara, 5 min from the station | Japan's largest mosque, with a halal market selling meat, snacks and prayer goods | | Yunus Emre Cafe | Yoyogi-Uehara, same site | Turkish patisserie inside the mosque — baklava, kebabs, Turkish coffee. Cash or QR only | | Honolu Ebisu | Ebisu, 5 min | Halal chicken paitan ramen from ¥900, prayer space with wudu | | Sri Balaji | Nakameguro, 10 min | South Indian, Muslim chef, spices imported direct | | Poteri Bakery | Sangenjaya, 2 min | Halal fresh custard donuts. Popular flavours sell out |

Tokyo Camii is the one to plan around rather than squeeze in. It is one Chiyoda-line ride from Shibuya, the market is the best place in west Tokyo to buy halal meat and ingredients, and the two cafés on the site mean you can pray and eat in the same stop. Note that Yunus Emre closes briefly at prayer times and does not take cards. The rest of the city's prayer infrastructure is mapped in prayer rooms and mosques in Tokyo.

A Shibuya day that works#

  1. Harajuku first, in the morning. Takeshita-dori before the crowds, then Kebab Box J or Mr. HALAL for a cheap standing lunch.
  2. Meiji Jingu, which is a five-minute walk from both, and free.
  3. Tokyo Camii in the early afternoon if it is a Friday, or any day if you want the market. Three stops on the Chiyoda line.
  4. Back to Shibuya for dinner. Gyumon or Shinjuku-tei if you want certification, Naruto if you want a late group meal with a prayer room.
  5. Check Monday and Wednesday. Shinjuku-tei Shibuya closes Mondays, Naruto closes Wednesdays, and Enrique Marruecos closes Mondays.

How we checked this#

Every venue here is a listing in our directory with a last-verified date, an evidence link and a stated verification method. We name a certifier only where a certifying body appears in the evidence, never from a logo or a directory badge, and venues that serve alcohol are capped into a lower tier regardless of the kitchen. Closures are published in the delisting changelog rather than deleted, and the method is on how we verify. For the south-Asian side of Tokyo dining, see halal Indian and Pakistani restaurants in Tokyo; for the east side of the city, halal food in Asakusa.

Frequently asked questions

Is there halal food near Shibuya Crossing?
Yes, within a ten-minute walk. Halal Wagyu Yakiniku Gyumon is certified by the Malaysia Halal Corporation and is about five minutes away. Shinjuku-tei Shibuya, certified by Japan Muslim Access, is also about five minutes and has a prayer room. Halal Wagyu Yakiniku and Ramen Naruto is three minutes from the crossing, has Muslim staff, a prayer room and non-alcoholic beer, and stays open until 01:30.
Where can I eat halal in Harajuku?
Three venues in our data, all near Meiji-Jingumae. Kuta Bali Cafe is Muslim-owned Indonesian with a prayer room, one minute from Harajuku Station. Mr. HALAL serves New York-style chicken over rice from ¥880 behind Tokyu Plaza, with irregular opening hours worth checking. Kebab Box J is a long-running Turkish doner stand on Meiji-dori near Laforet, under ¥1,000.
Which Shibuya halal restaurants have a prayer room?
Shinjuku-tei Shibuya, Naruto and Kuta Bali Cafe in Harajuku all have one. Two stops away, Honolu in Ebisu has a prayer space with wudu facilities, and Tokyo Camii in Yoyogi-Uehara is Japan's largest mosque with a halal market and two cafés attached.
Is Gonpachi in Shibuya halal?
Partly, and the distinction matters. Sushi Gonpachi Shibuya serves halal Ozaki-wagyu and halal sushi courses, which need reserving around three days ahead, but alcohol is served in the venue. We list it in our halal-options tier rather than as a halal restaurant, because our tiers cap any venue that serves alcohol on the premises.
